See me

The other day, my four-year-old came up from playing downstairs to ask me for a drink of milk. Here is our conversation:

“Are you having fun down there?”
“Yes! Yes!” (jumping up and down)
“Mm hmm. What are you doing down there?”
“Just playing.”
“Mmm hmm.” (thinking of the dishes I was doing)
“Can you come down in the basement when you’re done with the dishes?”
“What do you want me to do down there?” (still thinking about dishes)
“Nothing. You’ll just see me. You’ll keep your eyes open and see me.” (Her exact words.)

Since that day, I have wondered, again and again, how often our children just want and need to be seen. Really seen. Not glanced at or over. Not critiqued.

Just seen and loved for who and what they really are.

I’m seeing them differently these days. Everything is slowing down and each moment matters so much more. I’m doing things differently.

When what we get done that day matters less than seeing them that day, the days are so filled and so good.

I grow a little happier each day. I hope they do, too.

My four-year-old has a lot to do with it. She’s like a little bird…always chirping, happy, and fluttering from place to place and thought to thought in a moment. Here’s another thing she said to me the other day:

“Mom, how about we play a game where you and me say I love you at the same time over and over, and that will be our special game?” (My heart!)

By the way, I’ve had a lot of people asking me about how to make this giant water bubble. It *seems* like an easy project, ha ha. :)

It’s really fun…tremendously fun, in fact. However. There were definitely some hiccups. I followed the same basic method found here.

But here are my additional pointers:

  • I made it to fit on our back porch. I didn’t want it on the grass here, because I didn’t want to kill any of it. This made it a lot less “cushy” than having it on grass. Next time I do it on cement, I would fill it up a lot fuller and put towels underneath for some cushion.
  • It sounds so simple to just duct tape around plastic. It’s really not. Try not to do it when it’s windy. Get some help and make sure you give yourself lots of time.
  • Use heavy duty duct tape. Very heavy duty. :)
  • Glitter and food coloring were fun in it.
